A Brief History of Garner Performing Arts Center in Garner, NC

  • 1923: The building is constructed to serve as the original Garner High School.
  • 1956: The facility graduates its last high school class and is repurposed to become Garner Elementary School.
  • 1992: The building ceases to operate as an elementary school.
  • 1998: The Wake County School Board announces plans to demolish the historic structure, prompting a community-led campaign to save it.
  • Post-1998: The building is saved and undergoes a major renovation. The former classrooms are converted into senior apartments called “Olde School Commons.”
  • Early 2000s: The Town of Garner purchases the school’s auditorium, which begins operating as the “Garner Historic Auditorium.”
  • 2006: The auditorium undergoes a massive, modernizing renovation, adding a new stage, backstage areas, professional lighting, sound systems, and other state-of-the-art features.
  • 2011: To reflect its significant upgrades and new mission, the venue is officially renamed the Garner Performing Arts Center (GPAC).
  • Present: The entire complex is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a vibrant, 471-seat venue for local and touring performances.
