If My Gum Measurements are Bad, What Should I Do?

Healthy gums are just as important as healthy teeth. To determine the health of your gums, dentist perform gum measurement tests. This involves using a small probe and measuring how far it goes into your gums in millimeters. The dentist will say numbers 1 through 7 out loud so that an assistant can record them.

Your goal should be to keep your gum measurements as low as possible as numbers 1 through 3 represent healthy gums. The higher the measurements, the more likely you have gum disease. In the event your dentist informs you that your measurements are high, there are several options you have.

You may visit our office more frequently than the standard twice a year for professional teeth cleanings. In the most extreme case, you may need surgery. However, this is typically only recommended if you have advanced periodontal disease.

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to prevent high gum measurements. First and foremost, stick to a healthy diet full of fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean protein. Secondly, brush your teeth twice a day and floss your teeth once daily. Lastly, don’t miss out on professional dental cleanings every six months or so. Ashburn, VA dentist, Costa Family Dentistry, has explained that many are asking what they can do to improve their gum lines

If your gum measurements are concerning, we’ll let you know and work with you to design a customized plan that will improve your overall gum health.
