Dental radiographs, often called x-rays, are very important as they pertain to a patient’s dental care. They provide the dentist with a better picture of what is going on inside of the mouth. Specifically, a dental radiograph shows the hard tissues (teeth and bones) and the soft tissues that surround the teeth and jaw bones.

How Dental Radiographs Work:

An x-ray passes through the mouth, the teeth and the bones absorb more ray than the gums and the soft tissues. This causes the teeth to appear lighter on the final radiograph image. Problem areas, such as tooth decay and infection appear darker on the radiograph because they do not absorb as much of the x-ray.

The appearance of some objects in the mouth can vary on a radiograph. For example, fillings and crowns can appear differently depending on what materials they are made of. Some may appear dark and some may appear light. However, no matter what kind of dental work you have had previously, the dentist can identify any of the areas that may need attention or fixing.

Benefits of Dental Radiographs:

  • Dental radiographs can help to identify the following:
  • Caries- tooth decay
  • Diseases in the bone
  • Periodontal (gum) disease
  • Infections
  • Some types of tumors
  • Injuries

Dentists can detect changes in soft and hard tissue with the help of a radiograph. In children, a radiograph can also help to identify growth and development of teeth and jawbones. The dentist will decide on the frequency of when radiographs are needed depending on a patient’s oral examination, symptoms, health history, and risk of oral disease or age. For patients prone to tooth decay, the dentist may recommend radiographs to be taken annually to identify problem areas in order to implement treatment.
