A brief History of the North Carolina State Farmers Market
The North Carolina State Farmers Market in Raleigh has a rich history rooted in the need for a centralized hub for farmers to sell their produce and connect with buyers. Today, the NC State Farmers Market remains a vital agricultural hub, serving as a year-round marketplace for fresh produce, meats, plants, and other North Carolina products, connecting farmers directly with consumers and businesses.

Here’s a timeline of the North Carolina State Farmers Market development:

  • Pre-1955: Before a formal market existed, local farmers sold their goods in various locations without a central gathering point. Farmers recognized the need for a larger, organized location that would benefit wholesalers, truckers, and individual farmers.
  • 1955: First State Farmers Market Established: The very first State Farmers Market was constructed on a 17-acre site in a different part of Raleigh by a private developer.
  • 1958: NCDA Involvement Begins: The developer opened a “Farmers Section” within this market, which was then leased to the North Carolina Department of Agriculture (NCDA) for operation and maintenance. This marked the NCDA’s direct involvement in managing a state farmers market.
  • 1961: State Ownership: The NCDA officially purchased the Farmers Market in 1961 and has continued to operate all state-owned Farmers Markets across North Carolina ever since.
  • Mid-1970s: Growing Pains: By the mid-1970s, the original State Farmers Market had outgrown its capacity. The increasing number of sellers and buyers made it clear that expansion and improved facilities were necessary.
  • 1979: Need for Expansion Identified: A study by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed the need for a larger, more modern facility. The chosen site for the new market was the NCDA dairy farm, strategically located near Dorothea Dix Hospital and with easy access to Interstate 40, making it convenient for farmers across the state.

1991: Relocation to Current Site: The State Farmers Market moved to its current, much larger location on Agriculture Street in Raleigh. The State Farmers Market Restaurant, a popular fixture, also moved to this new location around this time.
