Getting a Tooth Pulled Over Summer, Will it Hurt?

Getting a Tooth Pulled Over Summer, Will it Hurt?

With the summer coming up, you may have fun plans ahead, whether it’s going to the beach, the mountains, etc. Regardless, the last thing you want to deal with is pain of any sort, especially if it is tooth pain. If you’ve visited with dentist lately, and you’ve been told you may need a tooth “pulled” or an “extraction,” you may have some questions.

Commonly, many individuals would like to know if getting a tooth pulled hurts.
Frankly, an extraction is typically a straightforward process with usually little to no pain involved during the process. Specifically, an extraction is considered a minor oral surgery that will take place if a tooth needs to be removed for various reasons such as disease, trauma or crowding.

What To Expect:

If you need an extraction, it is important to know what to expect. Prior to the procedure, you’ll receive an anesthetic, which numbs the tooth to ensure that your experience is pain-free. Once you are fully numb, the dentist will use special tools to carefully loosen the tooth of interest. Here, you might feel pressure from the tool, but no pain. When the tooth becomes extremely loose, forceps will be used to remove the tooth from your mouth. Moistened gauze will be placed on the area to control any excess bleeding.

Following the Procedure:

After a couple hours, you may start to develop feeling back in your teeth and mouth. At this point, the gums or site of extraction may feel sore or tender. Be sure not bite your cheeks during this time and to refrain from eating any hard foods. It is also imperative that you follow all of the post-operative instructions that the dentist has given to you.

For any discomfort or pain, you can simply take an over-the-counter ibuprofen. Many individuals receive extractions and are able to keep the pain to a minimum. Pain or discomfort should subside after a few days.

If for any reason you are encountering prolonged pain, bleeding or swelling, you should contact the dentist immediately!
